After Surgery Care

Post Operative Instructions for Lumbar Laminectomy and Lumbar Discectomy

No lift over 10 Pounds for 2 weeks

No tub bath 

No swimming pool 

Minimal bending at waist

Limit your twisting and turning

Do not sit for a long period of time (no more than 30-40 minutes at a time) 

You may shower post-op day two

No strenuous activities 

ice pack is recommended to back for first 3 days

Walk three times a day for 5-10 Minutes

Short, frequent walks are encouraged to promote circulation and aid in recovery


If given a brace, wear it with all activity for 2 weeks,  after two weeks 1-2 hours a day for comfort

It is not required to wear your brace when sleeping

Return to your normal diet but make sure you take in extra protein


Post operative instructions for Lumbar Fusion

No lift over 10 Pounds for 2 weeks

After two weeks you can lift 20 pounds

No tub bath 

No swimming pool 

Minimal bending at waist

No lift over 10 Pounds for 2 weeks

       after two weeks you can lift 20 pounds

Limit your twisting and turning

You may shower post-op day two

Walk 3 times a day for 5-10 minutes

No overhead work


Use your cervical collar for 2 weeks. keep it on at all times, you can take it off to shower and eat


The first two days after surgery eat soft foods and liquids, then return to your normal diet.  Make sure you take in extra protein

Post Operative Instructions Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Placement of Artificial Disc

No lift over 10 Pounds for 2 weeks

       after two weeks you can lift 20 pounds

No tub bath 

No swimming pool 

Minimal bending at the neck

Limit your twisting and turning

You may shower post-op day two

Walk 3 times a day for 5-10 minutes

No overhead work


There is no need to wear a cervical collar for this type of sugery

You need to wear a cervical collar for this type of surgery for the first two weeks


You may return return to your normal diet.  Make sure you take in extra protein

Suture removal and Wound care Instructions



Your incision may be closed with staples, steri-strips, or skin glue.


If you are sent home with sutures or staples, they will be looked at on first post-operative visit


Change bandage after 2 days or if dressing gets dirty.  If there is blood on it then change it as often as needed


It may take time for numbness and pain to improve after cervical or lumbar spine surgery. Some pain in the surgical area is normal for weeks following the procedure.


If your post-operative pain is significantly worse than before surgery, contact your surgeon’s office immediately.



Medication Instruction



Prescription Information


You will likely receive a pain medication and muscle relaxer prescription upon discharge to help manage post-surgical pain.


Refills


Refills are authorized by your surgery team if deemed necessary. Note that not all surgical teams offer refills for pain medications.


All prescription refills will be sent electronically to your designated pharmacy.


Stay hydrated to help your body recover and reduce the risk of constipation from pain medications


May use over-the-counter stool softeners and/or laxatives as needed for constipation.
